Work Permit (LMIA)

International students who have a valid Canadian Study Permit and are enrolled in a Canadian educational institution have many opportunities to work in Canada. Most jobs do not require a work permit, but most off-campus jobs do require a work permit, although there are some special exceptions.

Below is a list of Canadian work permit options for students.

On-campus work permit exemptions:
International students studying full-time with a valid Canadian study permit do not need a work permit.

Off Campus Work Permit:
International students studying full-time with a valid Canadian student permit are eligible to work off-campus if their institution participates in the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) off-campus work permit program there is.

Cooperation programs and work permits for internships:
This applies to international students studying in a degree program that requires work experience as part of a cooperative or internship program.

Work permit after graduation:
International students who have completed an academic program of at least eight months in Canada are eligible to obtain a postgraduate work permit.

Work Permit for Spouse of International Student:
A spouse accompanying an international student with a valid Canadian Study Permit is also eligible to obtain a Canadian Study Permit or an Open Work Permit that does not require work.

Benefits of choosing Canada as your study destination:

  • Most international students in Canada can work full-time, with scheduled breaks, for up to 20 hours per week without a work permit.
  • Working while studying allows you to earn a living, meet new people, and build connections that will help you stand out later in your job search.
